Position Description The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) keeps Americans safe at home by countering international crime, illegal drugs, and instability abroad. INL helps countries deliver justice and fairness by strengthening their police, courts, and corrections systems. These efforts reduce the amount of crime and illegal drugs reaching U.S. shores. This position is located in INL’s Office of Global Policy and Programs Transnational Programs Division (INL/GPP/TP) and supports the Counter Wildlife Trafficking (CWT) and Natural Resource Crimes team. INL/GPP’s Natural Resource Crimes/Wildlife Trafficking team plays a leadership role in INL, the Department, and the interagency community in combating these crimes internationally, including regarding INL’s role in implementing the National Strategy to Combat Wildlife Trafficking. The team’s principal roles are 1) design and management of funded projects to advance our policy goals.; 2) domestic policy development through interagency and intra-Department coordination 3) development of and participation in multilateral processes and other diplomatic and public diplomacy initiatives. The team can also collaborate with or assist INL regional offices on development and implementation of bilateral programs with a natural resource crimes component. The team works closely with other offices in the Department, USAID, DOJ, DOI, DHS, and other partners, in key international efforts, with a focus on capacity building and adoption of consistent standards for delivering criminal justice outcomes for these crimes. The Natural Resource Crimes/Wildlife Trafficking team is responsible for the coordination of all related justice sector capacity building activities undertaken by INL/GPP. The team serves as the key focal point for the bureau on natural resource crime issues such as wildlife and timber trafficking and illegal mining and their nexus to organized crime, corruption, and money laundering, and serves as a resource for expertise to the Department and various interagency working groups. The team’s work focuses on providing training and capacity building to disrupt criminal networks profiting from the illegal wildlife trade, illegal logging, and other natural resource crimes by strengthening legislative frameworks; enhancing law enforcement and investigative capabilities; developing prosecutorial and judicial capacity; and supporting cross border law enforcement cooperation. INL works with other U.S. agencies, NGOs, and international organizations to implement these programs.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesTravel Requirements Travel is authorized for this position in accordance with the award and shall not exceed the designated ceiling. Domestic and international travel may be required for this position and will be done at the behest of the Office Director, Deputy Director, or Budget and Logistics Team Lead.
